West End musicals star Darren Day is set to sing at Viva on Sunday, stepping in for his pal Joe Longthorne who has been ordered to rest by doctors.
Joe revealed earlier this month that he had again suffered a bout of bad health after returning from a winter in Marbella where he had several performances.
He was due to star in a variety show at Viva Blackpool tomorrow having enjoyed an Easter special performance, but due to the illness has had to step aside.
Joe has twice fought cancer. Diagnosed with leukaemia in the late 1980s, he fought the disease until 2006, when he had a bone marrow transplant. Then, in summer 2014, he underwent a 12-hour operation at Royal Preston Hospital to remove a tumour from his mouth and neck.
A spokesman for Viva Blackpool said: “Joe has been advised to rest by his medical team but has asked his close friend Darren Day to perform this Sunday to ensure that his fabulous fans still enjoy a brilliant show.
“Darren is really looking forward to performing alongside the Viva cast.
“All of Joe’s future dates at Viva are unaffected and the Viva team, Joe and his management are looking forward to the season ahead.”
Joe’s manager and partner said Joe had recently undergone x-rays and tests and he praised the care he had been given at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
He said: “The summer season at Viva are Joe’s main concern, especially his 30th anniversary show on July 9 - that’s going to be a real show to celebrate.”
