Julian Smith - Grand Theatre, Blackpool
IT’S some years since Curtis Stigers blew an Opera House audience away with his smooth sax sounds.
So it made an excellent evening to hear the equally accomplished Julian Smith at this theatre as part of the February Festival this week.
And it was easy to see why the star saxophonist received a massive 700,000 telephone votes in Britain’s Got Talent.
Finishing second runner up in the final to Diversity and Susan Boyle meant national fame and the chance to tour top venues, with a talented three-piece band.
Quietly spoken but loudly dressed in trademark woollen cap, leather jacket and unlaced boots, Julian was instantly likeable and much appreciative of the 300 strong audience who turned out to listen. Their reward was a cool evening of classic sax.
With occasional vocals provided by an accomplished keyboard player their top tunes included the Bill Withers/Grover Washington Jnr classic, Just The Two of Us and George Michael’s Careless Whisper before an encore which included All By Myself - the song which propelled him to success from the TV semi final.
