Best of both worlds

Poulton restaurateur Gennaro Calafiore has launched a Happy Hour in his venue’s recently opened ground floor wine and cocktail bar.

“We converted the reception area into Giu – a wine and cocktail bar – to keep up with changing demands and tastes,” said Gennaro, who has run Gennar’s Sapore dell’Italia in the Market Place for more than seven years. “Not everyone who has a drink wants a meal, and not everyone who wants a meal wants to head off elsewhere for a drink afterwards, so the new area is the best of both worlds.”

Now the Happy Hour – 6 until 7pm from Sunday to Thursday, and 10 to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, boasts a range of offers including buy two glasses of wine and get the rest of the bottle free (on selected wines) and two for one cocktails.

“It has been working very well and the new bar has been well received both by our existing customers and by plenty of people who just wanted to try a different environment,” said Gennaro. “I’m very pleased with how it has gone down, because I am always working hard to keep up the standards – it’s my name outside, so it’s important everyone likes what they see when they come inside.”

Gennaro says he hopes his venue provides “the whole package.”

“It’s not just about having a drink or having something to eat,” he says. “It’s about the way people are treated, the attitude of the staff – we are out to give 100 per cent and that’s the feedback we have been receiving.”

There is also a drink and dine meal deal available from Sunday to Thursday – £9.99 for two courses plus a glass of house wine, Carling, Thwaites or soft drink.

He is also planning live music nights on the first Wednesday of the month, staring on November 2.

“I’ve lots of other thing in the pipeline too,” he says. “It’s important to keep giving my guests something new.”

Gennar’s and Gui are open nightly (except Monday) from 5pm.
