These world renowned performers and seasoned showbiz professionals really jumped at the chance to perform in Blackpool.

The acrobats and singers from Circolombia, a world touring Colombian circus, put on a spectacular showcase in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom to officially open the resort’s fourth annual Showzam! festival.

Showzam! will see acts from 11 countries, ranging from street performers to aerial acrobats and burlesque dancers, entertain in venues across the resort over the February half term holiday.

Bosses behind Circolombia, who have toured South America, Russia and Australia, and will take their show on to London and Paris after Blackpool, said they were “honoured” to be asked to take part in the festival.

They will perform their new acts in the Blackpool Tower Circus at 2.30pm daily from February 14 to February 18.

Director Felicity Simpson said: “It’s the most wonderful circus ring that exists, it’s world renowned.

“It’s an honour for our performers to be on this stage.”

Festival organisers, LeftCoast, VisitBlackpool and SeaChange, hope that Showzam! will set Blackpool up as a circus capital of the world as well as establish the town as a year-round resort with something for everyone.

Julia Turpin, executive director of LeftCoast, said: “It’s our aim to have the best acts come to Blackpool and make it the circus capital.”

Coun Graham Cain, the council’s cabinet member for tourism, added: “We’re making Blackpool a year-round destination. You can sense the excitement of performers to play in our venues.”

As well as the circus ring, acts will fill the Tower Ballroom and four Winter Gardens venues, including the Floral Hall and Horseshoe, while performers will spill out onto Blackpool’s streets to entertain residents and visitors.

And festival goers can try their hands at circus skills in workshops at Blackpool Pleasure Beach too, learning aerial artistry or contortionism, dance, acting and skating with Dancing On Ice star Katie Stainsby.

Janet Walker, director of Stageworks at the Pleasure Beach, said: “Showzam! is great for Blackpool, we have to keep the town alive 12 months of the year, it’s fantastic for everyone.”

And experts from Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Tower and Winter Gardens will be giving behind the scenes tours of the venues, showing visitors into all the nooks and crannys of the famous venues.
