A South Shore dance academy is celebrating after winning a shelf full of trophies in the national Performer of the Year 2012 awards.

Cats With Red Shoes, based in Highfield Road, took students to the national competition and were delighted when eight-year-old Heather Lewis won awards in Modern Jazz and Tap along with her twin sister Eleanor scoring in Modern and Tap.

Joining them in the awards was Dayna Katic, aged five, winning an award in Ballet – the youngest student from the academy to attend the prestigious event.

They were among dance students from various top dance academies from across the country who all came together in Manchester.

The entrants first come on to the stage in age groups and learn a routine on the stage before being eliminated until the winners are chosen.

Hayley-Anna Dancy, principal of Cats With Red Shoes, commented on the high standard of dancers throughout the day from five year olds to adults.

“Approximately 400 dancers took to the stage throughout the day and we are extremely proud that despite the small amount of students we took on the day we brought away five awards for the second year running.

“All our students in every discipline – ballet, tap, musical theatre (modern), cheerleading, freestyle and gymnastics – put so much time and dedication in we are like an extended family. What more could a teacher ask for?”
