A special gala day returns for the 116th occasion as organisers look to improve on last year’s turnout.
Thornton Gala Day takes place this Saturday.
The main event is the crowning of the Gala Queen and Princess, which will return to Jubilee Gardens after many years at King George’s Playing fields.
Other activities to be held throughout the day include the procession at 11am, including a tour around Thornton.
The procession will end at Marsh Mill 90 minutes later, before the crowds make their way to the gardens for the fun fair, where stalls and games will be set up.
Leanne Mellor, vice-secretary of the gala committee, has been working all year to make sure the event is a huge success after hundreds supported the town in last year’s event, and hopes organisers’ efforts will not be in vain.
“We have been working around the clock to make it happen, so we just hope as many people come as possible,” she said. “It’s a great event and there is something for everyone. I’ve always loved it, ever since I was a kid, and hopefully many others feel the same.”
