HE took up ballet just over 12 months ago.

But a young dancer from Blackpool is set to take a huge leap in his fledgling career when he takes to the stage in a major performance next weekend.

Nine-year-old Brandon Fowler will perform with the English Youth Ballet in its production of Swan Lake, to be held in Preston.

Brandon, from Plumpton Avenue, South Shore, currently trains at the Cats with Red Shoes Dancing School after taking up ballet a little over a year ago.

But the youngster, a pupil at St Nicholas Primary School, in Marton, won his place in the company after taking part in auditions with around 250 students from around the North West.

He will be the youngest boy taking part in the production, and has previously reached the final round of auditions to play Billy Elliot on the West End stage.

Hayley Dancy, Brandon’s teacher at Cats with Red Shoes, on Highfield Road, South Shore, performed with the English Youth Ballet’s production of Sleeping Beauty 10 years ago.

She said his place in the show, which takes place in the city’s Charter Theatre, is well deserved.

She said: “He works very hard so it’s good.

“It’s very prestigious and it’s quite a brutal process to get there.

“At first he was nervous but now I think he’s just excited.

“He’s a busy young lad.”

The first show takes place on Friday April 5 at the Charter Theatre, at 7.30pm.

There are two shows on Saturday April 6 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The up and coming dancing star has previously told The Gazette: “It feels extraordinary to get this far with dance.”

Brandon battled it out in the final audition for the West End role of Billy Elliot in January.

And although he was unsuccessful, he has been invited to try out for the role of Billy Elliot again next year.
