Membranes frontman lifts lid on festival chaos

The weekend event was plagued with problems, people reporting over-crowding and huge queues before the gates were apparently shut to ticket holders.

John’s band The Membranes were second on the main stage, which at one point was running more than three hours behind schedule.

John said: “It was a complete disaster. We’ve worked with this promoter before and it was a great event. I just don’t know what happened.

“The stage manager wasn’t there, his assistant was trying to run things. When it was time to go on he couldn’t even tell us how to get to the stage.

“They didn’t have microphones for our choir, nobody seemed to be in control, I took over setting up the stage myself.

“Every single thing that could go wrong did go wrong.

“It was absolute chaos. Bands are used to this, they can make a show work, it shouldn’t happen.

“When we arrived there was no running water backstage, they couldn’t cook. There was a cabin for artists but there was no table or chairs.”

John said The Membranes hadn’t yet been paid for the show.

The event was due to continue on Sunday but was cancelled after Saturday’s problems.

John said: “People with tickets queued for hours and didn’t get in and that’s not right, they deserve their money.

“We have people to pay as well. I hope everyone gets sorted.”

Festival organisers have now apologised but insist the event did not go over capacity.

They have promised a full investigation into what went wrong and say legal action could be taken against some suppliers.
