The attraction is the latest of Merlin’s experiences in the resort to welcome back visitors, who dare to take the journey through the thrills and frights that lurk inside its chambers.

And while characters such as the torturer and Plague doctor’s assistant have been eager to lure back victims to the cells - they are under strict instructions to follow new measures in accordance with Covid-19 guidance.

Visitors, in line with other attractions, including the Tower Eye, Madame Tussauds and the Sea Life Centre, will have to book the experience in advance online.

Groups entering the dungeons are restricted to 12 with visitors kept to household bubbles. And all guests will be asked to wear face coverings during their time inside.

Performance manager at the Blackpool Tower Dungeons Sharon Lancaster said health and safety of guests and actors was key but it was vital the Dungeons remained a place of fun, with scare-factor guaranteed.

She added: “Our cast were all put on furlough during lockdown and are delighted to have been able to return to character and invite back guests.

“There is obviously a reference to the measures throughout but with special care to the sensitivity of the situation.

“But the dungeons very much remains a fun and interactive experience albeit with social distancing measures in place.”
