Stepping away from the mic and onto a bike, the Lytham-based comic is set to pedal nearly 150 miles from Blackpool Tower to the east coast heading to Scarborough. He is embarking on the charity cycle on July 29 in the hope of bringing smiles to a charity close to his heart, Comedy Support Act.

In the last fortnight he has already raised more than £1,300 in sponsorship smashing his £1000 target for the UK-based organisation founded by fellow professional comedians to provide emergency funds and assistance to comedians who find themselves in financial hardship through serious illness or accident..

Phil, who founded Woofers Comedy Club, which usually presents a programme at Lowther Pavilion Theatre, said he’d found himself with ‘time of his hands’ and was inspired to take on a new challenge, whilst raising money for a good cause.

He said: “Being a comedian is a great job and I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world for half my life so far doing a job I truly love.

“Every week we stand-up comics make thousands of people laugh in comedy clubs across the UK. It’s a great way to make a living and a fun job to have but, at times, it can be a lonely one and never more so than when you’re ill.

“It’s certainly not been an easy time and it’s no joke being unable to work because of accident or illness and it’s hard to concentrate on getting well when you’re suffered financial hardship as a result.

“The charity is only a couple of years old but has done great things in that time for people I know from the circuit - I’ve done a few events for them, it’s a cause close to my heart.

“I’ve been enjoying getting back on my bike again in this time and this has given me something to focus towards and raise money too.”
