The organisers behind the South Shore event had been hanging on to the last minute but have now said it will not be possible, although they are hoping a scaled down event may be held later in the year.

Carnival chairman Geoff Moore said: “It is with great regret that we have to confirm the inevitable, considering the very unusual circumstances we are all existing in at this particular time, that this year’s Blackpool Carnival is to be cancelled.

“Bearing in mind the vast amount of effort and expense incurred by so many, all of whom we are so grateful to, for resurrecting the event three years ago and then also for the organisation of the second and third years event, it will be understood why we have delayed this announcement as long as we could possibly do.

"It is absolutely apparent now that there is no chance of the event continuing in July, in fact it would be very inappropriate and irresponsible for the committee to even contemplate this scenario, we are however hopeful to organise a scaled down event much later in the year, if, of course it is completely safe to do so.”

Last year’s event saw hundreds gather for a wide variety of music and entertainment at Waterloo Headland and a parade along the Promenade.
