Youth League match of the week: Blackpool Rangers Tangerines U15 v Spirit of Youth

The weather finally allowed an AllStars match of the week to be played for the first time this year and Blackpool Rangers Tangerines certainly made up for lost time with a 9-1 win in this Hogan Cup tie at Bispham Gala Field.

The Tangerines play in the higher division and more than justified their billing as favourites with an emphatic victory.

It was Spirit’s first game for six weeks but they had far fewer cobwebs to blow away than the Tangerines, who last saw action in October.

Even so, Rangers took a grip on the contest from the off and never let go, scoring five in the first half and adding a further four after the break.

There were two goals apiece for Paul Hargreaves, Adam Cosgrove and Konnor Jones, whose twin Kyran was also on target along with Edward Peill. An own goal completed the tally.

In a series of well-worked team goals, Peill’s perhaps stood out as one of the shortest players on the field scored with a rare header.

After going seven behind, Spirit at least saw their perseverence rewarded with a goal as Ethan Howett finished well in the bottom corner and a good run and cross by Iain Fox.

Tangerines manager Charles Peill was full of praise for the visitors: “Credit to Spirit for cracking on,” he said. “We have the luxury of a decent-sized squad which helps in difficult conditions like this.”

The manager also praised those who worked on the pitch to ensure the game went ahead, adding: “We are pretty chuffed with our first year back in the alpha league. We are third and holding our own. Last time we were in the top league we only won one game all season. I’m impressed with the players’ attitude. “

Spirit manager Daniel Pack wasn’t too downhearted. He said: “The players’ spirit is very good and we hope for some wins.”
