The 64-year-old former England captain will take up his post on July 1, World Rugby announced - his appointment had been widely expected and was rubber-stamped at a summit meeting in Dublin.

Beaumont succeeds Frenchman Bernard Lapasset, who had previously announced he would not be seeking-re-election, while former Argentina scrum-half and skipper Agustin Pichot was elected vice-chairman.

Beaumont, who lives in Lytham, skippered England to the Grand Slam in 1980.

He played all his club rugby at Fylde RFC and runs the Bill Beaumont textile company based in Chorley
