Lancashire rugby union team team started their defence of the County Championship with an emphatic 57-19 victory over Northumberland at Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground.

Skipper Chris Johnson, the Fylde fly-half, scored a hat-trick of tries on a rain-swept afternoon when the Red Rose county ran in nine touchdowns.

At one point Lancashire had trailed 19-17, but they hit back with a vengeance, ‘nilling’ their rivals in the second half in the process of racking up more tries.

Lancashire now meet Yorkshire, victors over Cheshire on Saturday, at Scarborough on May 17.
