TWO sides looking for their first victory of the North One West season went into battle at Fleetwood and the home side ended the day all smiles.

A big Manchester side had plenty of early territory and possession but could not capitalise, whereas Tom Evans, Mark Turnpenny and Dave Hart all made inroads with strong runs, the latter held up just short.

Despite conceding weight advantage, Fleet managed to turn over scrum ball and Ryan Riches fed the impressive centres Tom Wilson and Ryan Crisp, who went over for the first score, converted by Riches.

Fleetwood then dominated for long periods, with Lee Storton also prominent.

They gained a 12-point cushion when play was switched from a catch-and-drive and Turnpenny finished off in the corner.

With Harry Pilkington also playing confidently at full-back, Fleet stetched their lead to 22-0 at half-time thanks to a Riches penalty and a Mark Stephenson try from Tom Wilson’s offload.

As Jamie Moran, Matt Larkin and Ben Corless dominated up front, the dynamic Evans picked up a loose ball off his boot laces and raced over from halfway, Riches’ converting.

Fleet conceded two tries in the closing quarter but hope this victory kick-starts their season. Zac Coultas also impressed on the wing.
