FYLDE RFC – who have an intriguing home clash with Wharfedale tomorrow – are on the verge of re-signing centre Mike Waywell.

The Woodlands club are hopeful that they can agree a package for him to return after Christmas.

However, Vale Of Lune and Fleetwood are said to be interested in securing his services as well.

Fylde coach Mark Nelson: “Waywell is back on the scene and we have lined up a potential job for him, and I am hopeful that we will be able to secure his services and that he will join us after Christmas.”

Fylde take on Wharfedale at Ansdell, though Nelson will be unable to name his starting line-up until as late as Saturday morning because of a number of injury checks he needs to make.

Wing or full-back Ollie Viney has been suffering from a ‘dead’ leg, while there are other doubts among the back division.

These centre on Scott Barrow (calf) Richard Kenyon (hamstring) and Oli Brennand (ankle).

Skipper and back row forward Evan Stewart sustained a hand injury and needs to pass a fitness test.

Josh Beaumont has been involved in trials with the England Students squad, and Fylde will need to look at his state of play.

Beaumont’s second row partner Paul Arnold requires a check on a long-standing Achilles problem.

Fylde come into the match on the back of a splendid effort at Blackheath last weekend when they won 17-14.

While Fylde were producing one of their best performances of the season, Wharfedale went down at home by 34-15 against Tynedale in the Yorkshire Dales.

Tynedale had the result effectively in the bag by the interval having posted 27 points without reply.

Nelson said: “We deserved our win over Blackheath because we created more chances on a day when both sides defended well.

“I am expecting a really attritional game against Wharfedale.

“They lost to a resurgent Tynedale in their last match and they will be looking to bounce back against us tomorrow.”

Fylde squad: backs, Viney, Spragg, C Briers, S Briers, Barrow, Kenyon, Brennand, Johnson, Wallwork, De La Harpe.

Forwards: Birchall, Roddam, Lavelle, Banks, J Beaumont, Arnold, Stewart, Vernon, S Beaumont, McGinnis, Brennand, Altham. Kick-off 3pm.
