FYLDE RU coach Mark Nelson has hailed former England supremo Brian Ashton as a “genius”.
Ashton came back to his roots at the Woodlands to be a coaching consultant at the start of the season, and he has made a real impact.
Fylde lead National League Two North and take on title rivals Loughborough Students on Saturday at Ansdell.
Nelson said: “I’m delighted to pay tribute to Brian Ashton’s role in helping this squad develop.
“There’s no doubt that he’s a coaching genius.
“He encourages a mindset among players which emphasises attacking, adventurous rugby, and using space creatively.
“The players have really bought into this and the results and performances speak for themselves.”
Fylde have reached the top by adopting an open, expansive approach – in 15 of their 17 games to date they have scored four tries or more.
Second-placed Loughborough Students visit the Woodlands with a comparable reputation open and attractive rugby.
