Preesall swimmer Jack Waller has been honoured for his sporting excellence with a top national award.

The 11-year-old St Aidan’s Church of England High Schoool pupil won the Amateur Swimming Associaition Achievement Award (Youth Participant) at the governing body’s special ceremony at Leamington Spa on Saturday.

The awards honour the commitment and achievements of individuals, facilities and schools involved in aquatics.

Jack was honoured for conquering low self-esteem by earning a series of swimming awards to boost his confidence and self-belief.

He has gained a total of 47 ASA awards, including Personal Survival, Rookie Lifeguard, Diving, 5,000m Distance, Honours, Water Polo and Speed awards, also completing his Elite Swimmer award before his 11th birthday.

Jack is now looking forward to undertaking the Great North Swim for charity in Lake Windermere next June.

He told The Gazette: “Saturday was a fantastic day. I heard lots of amazing stories about other people involved in swimming.

“I didn’t know I’d won until my name was read out and I was really chuffed.

“I absolutely love swimming and I want to keep going to the pool and continue to improve.

“Swimming is such a fun sport and I would encourage everyone to learn to swim as it can save your life.

Jack was nominated for the award by his coach Diane Glover of Glover’s Swim School.

His proud mother Cheryl said: “I took Jack to a baby and toddler swimming group when he was six months old and his progress hasn’t stopped.

“He swims all over the North-West and is training hard for the Great North Swim – half a mile in Windermere.”

The awards were presented at Leamington Spa by British diver and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Freddie Woodward.

They recognise the commitment and achievement of all age groups, from youngsters learning to swim through to elite athletes on the international stage, as well as the outstanding contribution of volunteers and operators.
