Sporting hero Ryan honoured by MP

‘Big Ry’ from South Shore is known all over the Fylde coast for staging sporting events to raise money for those in need.

Ryan’s latest challenge is to raise awareness rather than funds but is no less important. The Blackpool charity campaigner is doing 25 squats a day for 25 days to help raise the profile of mental health issues.

Ry is two weeks into his challenge and said: “I am doing this to raise awareness of mental health. Keep busy and stay positive.

“Keeping active and fit helps cleanse your mind and always makes you feel positive.”

Among the many sporting stars impressed by Ry’s efforts is Euro 96 hero Gascoigne, who said: “Hi Big Ryan, it’s Gazza here. It’s great what you are doing for the community and the charity work. Keep up the good work.”

Gazza is among the clients of Blackpool businessman Spencer Brown, a friend and supporter of Ryan who runs the Gold Star commercial agency.

World boxing champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, two more Gold Star clients, are among others to have sent video messages to Ryan.

“I phoned Spencer and Gazza picked the phone up,” explained Ryan, who was delighted to receive a personal video message from the football legend.

Another friend and supporter of Ryan’s efforts is the newly-appointed Dundee United manager Micky Mellon.

The former Blackpool player and Fleetwood Town boss also sent Ry a video message to say: “All the best and lots of love from Dundee, Big Ryan. Keep up the good work and no doubt I’ll catch up with you soon.”
