Lytham skipper ready for big test

Captain Tom Higson led by example at Vernon Road as St Annes’ main wicket-taker and leading run-scorer.

The skipper took 3-21 from his five overs after putting Fleetwood in. The visitors were dismissed for 125 in 36.3 overs despite Mike Clinning’s 33. Higson then opened for St Annes and made exactly 50, then Ryan Ayres’ unbeaten 30 saw them over the line in 22.4 overs at 126/4.

Higson was one of three victims for Declan Clerkin as Fleetwood suffered back-to-back defeats.

Lytham endured their first loss of the campaign as wickets tumbled at Blackpool.

The visitors chose to bat and were dismissed for just 89 in 30.1 overs at Stanley Park.

Ben Saunders scored more than half their runs, with seven fours in his 46 from 64 balls.

None of his team-mates reached double figures, though, totalling just 34 with the bat between them as Josh Boyne and Kasim Munir took three wickets apiece, Boyne’s seven overs going for just 15 runs.

The chase was hard work, though, for Blackpool, who found themselves deep in trouble at 60-5 before closing out victory at 90-7 in 24.2 overs. Opener Sam Dutton did his utmost to keep the ship steady with 35 from 28 balls (six fours) before Boyne (19) and skipper Ben Howarth (16) ensured the job was done.

Saunders kept the hosts on edge with 3-11 from his eight overs but Blackpool join St Annes at the top of Group A on eight points.

Lytham host St Annes in a Fylde derby on Saturday, when Thornton Cleveleys entertain Blackpool and it’s Fleetwood’s weekend off.
