When the players came in for the second interval Lancashire were 58 -2, still six runs in arrears of Nottinghamshire, who had made 222 in their first innings in reply to the home side’s 158.

Rain also interrupted the morning session and the cricket was almost entirely dominated by the visiting batsmen, who scored 77 runs for the loss of Riki Wessels, who was leg before to Liam Livingstone for 44.

Wessels had extended his seventh-wicket partnership with Tom Moores to 82 and Notts took an early lunch on 204-7, giving them a lead of 46.

The last three Notts wickets fell for the addition of 18 runs in 29 balls on the resumption but that still left Steven Mullaney’s side with a very useful lead of 64 runs.

Livingstone made the first breakthrough in the afternoon when he had Luke Wood caught in the gully by Dane Vilas for eight.

Moores was next to go when he made room to clip Joe Mennie to leg but only succeeded in deflecting the ball onto his leg stump. However, the value of his 143-minute 38 may only become apparent at the conclusion of the game.

Livingstone then polished off the innings when he had Jake Ball stumped and the Lancashire skipper finished the innings with 3-27. Tom Bailey took 3-26 from 19 overs and Mennie 3-46 on his debut.

Lancashire lost both Haseeb Hameed and Alex Davies in the 20 minutes before tea as they sought to wipe out their deficit and those wickets took the gloss off what had been a promising opening partnership of 49 in 18.4 overs.

Neither batsmen looked pleased with the decision, Hameed when he edged a forward defensive push and Davies when his attempted pull was pouched by a delighted Moores

Hameed and Davies were caught behind off Harry Gurney, Hameed for 19 and Davies for 0 as Lancashire came in to tea on 58-2, still six runs in arrears.
