Match of the Week: Lytham Jaguars U16 v Layton Clarets U16

Even so, the Clarets restricted their hosts to just two first-half goals but had no answer in the second period.

And they added a second before the break as Sam Oldfield converted a free-kick on his debut. It could have been different had Corry Stutt been luckier with a couple of first-half chances for Layton, while team-mate Jack Taylor also went close from a free-kick.

It wasn’t just the Glover show after the break as Kyle Pilling pushed up from centre-half into the midfield and scored two himself, besides creating a couple for striker Glover. The duo combined for the goal of the game. Pilling’s ball over top was controlled by Glover, who chipped the keeper in spectacular style.

Lytham used their substitutes well to control the contest, while the Clarets couldn’t give a rest to tiring legs.

The league title may be bound for AFC Blackpool, but the Jaguars are looking good for runners-up spot after this convincing display.

It’s been an up and down season for Layton but manager Mark Smith said: “We just carry on. The bottom line is the lads enjoy a game of footie.”

Clarets manager Darren Barrett couldn’t choose between two outstanding players for his man of the match. Kyle Pilling was solid at the back and then marauded forward in the second half, while winger Ben Davies also had a confidence-boosting display, testing the keeper and delivering some teasing corners.
