Kirhham's hockey heroics in Leeds

Kirkham Grammar Junior School U11 boys and girls' hockey teams travelled to Leeds University to take part in the North of England Finals.

In the boys’ first game, they beat Cullercoats 1-0 and then took the lead against King’s Chester, who came back to win 2-1.

That meant KGJS had to win their final group game against St Olave’s to progress to the semi-finals.

They did so with a 1-0 win to earn a tie with Martongate from Northumberland.

Kirkham played their best hockey of the tournament but couldn’t beat a keeper in fantastic form.

The match ended 0-0 but KGJS won through to the final on penalty flicks to face Altrincham Prep.

Again KGJS were in fine form and this time lost the shootout after another 0-0 draw.

The boys can be very proud of how well they played and were a credit to the school.

In the girls’ competition, Kirkham’s first match against Barnard Castle ended 1-1 and they then beat King’s Macclesfield 1-0.

In the final group game against Wakefield HS, KGJS scord the only goal to win the group and earn a semi-final clash with Yarm. Kirkham won this match 2-0 and faced Cundall Manor in the final, which ended goalless.

Due to the tournament running late, it was decided that both teams would share the title, so Kirkham were crowned joint North of England champions!
