Lancashire's Jordan Clark lit up an exhilarating first day of the County Championship Roses clash with a remarkable morning hat-trick at Emirates Old Trafford, although Yorkshire ended it on top.

Seam bowling all-rounder Clark trapped current Test captains Joe Root (22) and Kane Williamson lbw before getting Jonny Bairstow caught at third slip to leave Yorkshire 59 for four just before lunch.

Between them, the trio have scored 14,639 Test runs and over 30,000 in first-class cricket.

Yorkshire were bowled out for 192 as 27-year-old Clark went on to claim a career best five for 58 from 12.1 overs and affect a run out in his follow through.

Nineteen wickets fell in the day as Lancashire crumbled to 109 all out in reply, with Yorkshire leading by 83.

There was further bad news as Lancashire captain Liam Livingstone suffered a suspected broken left wrist midway through the afternoon as he attempted to take a catch at second slip and did not bat.

Meanwhile, Lancashire Thunder opened their Women’s Super League campaign with a six-wicket defeat to Loughborough Lightning at Southport.

In a low-scoring contest, a 29-run partnership between Georgia Adams and Georgia Elwiss guided the visitors to the victory over a Thunder side who were winless in the 2017 season.

Jenny Gunn and Sophie Devine claimed three wickets each in an impressive Lightning bowling display, having won the toss, which restricted Thunder to 72 all out and set up the victory.

Alex Hartley, who took 2-12 for Lancashire Thunder, said: “We just didn’t get enough with the bat.

“We were probably 25 runs short.

“It’s a disappointing start but it’s a long competition and it doesn’t mean anything.”
