Balder Success by-passed Cheltenham to come to Aintree and the ploy paid dividends as the six-year-old won the Doom Bar Maghull Novices Chase, the second race on Grand National day.

Wayne Hutchinson was content to bide his time on the Alan King-trained gelding and he stormed to the front between the final two fences.

A splendid leap at the last sealed victory and the further they went in this two-mile contest, the more Balder Success got on top.

The Nicky Richards-trained Simply Ned followed the winner home.

It was the fifth time Balder Success had won in six completed starts over fences.

Bookmaker reaction by Paddy Power was to make the winner a 20-1 shot for next season’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham.
