Highfield and South Shore are top of the table

Bat's the way to do it! An Under-13 table tennis tournament for Blackpool schools came to a thrilling conclusion at Blackpool Sports Centre.

Run by Table Tennis England and Blackpool Table Tennis, the event involved a coaching and officiating session before the finals, enabling the competitors to put their skills to good use on the table and off it.

The finals followed a series of qualifying competitions and lots of practice time at after-school clubs.

Young leaders from Blackpool Sixth and Blackpool and The Fylde College worked alongside Martin Ireland from Table Tennis England to ensure the smooth running of the event. The event formed part of the Lancashire School Games Stand Alone County Finals Programme, which will see 14 secondary schools from across the county battle it out for the title of Lancashire champions.

South Shore Academy and Highfield Humanities College progressed through to the final games to go head to head in an attempt to get the last few points that were up for grabs.

Highfield came out on top and will now represent Blackpool in the next round.

Dave Rohman, Blackpool School Games Organiser, said “Having the support of a national governing body and a local sports club can offer so much to a school competition and that is definitely what we had from Table Tennis England and Blackpool Table Tennis Club.

“Support such as this helps to raise the profile of a sport and the event itself, but also highlights the pathways available to young people in Blackpool.”
