The first fixture of the Lancashire Sportshall League was held at the Blackpool Sports Centre at Stanley Park last Sunday, when hundreds of enthusiastic young athletes from clubs and schools across Lancashire gathered in the warmth of the sports hall, well protected from wind and rain outside.

There was a cacophony of sound as the children shouted encouragement to their team-mates as they competed in the running races and various throwing and jumping competitions.

Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde AC team had representatives in all three age categories – Under 11, 13 and 15.

Many of those in the youngest age category were competing in their first competition, and BWF finished third overall, with many impressive individual performances.

U13 James Smith won the 30-second Speed Bounce with 88 jumps (one short of his best) in 30 seconds.

He also won the four-lap run with 1:21.8 and was fifth in the standing long jump with 1.9m. Natasha Webster won the U15 standing triple jump with 5.04m, besides being joint winner of the speed bounce (also with 88) and finishing sixth in the vertical jump. Team-mate Chloe Parsons as seventh.

Bradley Parsons was second in the U15 standing long jump with 2.25 and third i nthe standing triple jump with 6.78. Maisie Rogers was fifth in the shot with 6.79m.

For the U11s, Kieran Howard was third in the foam javelin with 18m and Felix Kowalski third in the 20-second speed bounce with 50.

Gracie Rutter was fifth in the vertical jump and third in the target throw, while Eve Crahan was sixth in the chest push.

The whole team enjoyed the competition and made many new friends from other teams.
