Young volunteers on an Open mission

Organisers of the initiative have been recruiting young people between the ages of 18 and 25 to help out with running golf projects across the county and ultimately to act as a volunteer at The Open, which takes place in July.

Even people who do not play golf have been invited to get involved.

Training evenings have already been set at Central Lancashire University, Goodison Park (home of Everton Football Club) and Myerscough College.

This year’s A Road To The Open has a lot to live up to.

So successful was a similar scheme at Sandwich last year that it won the inaugural golf development award from the PGAs of Europe, spreading the golfing gospel in Kent.

For instance, 25 young golf ambassadors were recruited, and more than 3,000 people were involved in golf legacy activities across that county.

n THE European Tour takes the road to Morocco tomorrow when the Trophee Hassan II tournament takes place at the Gold du Palais Royal in Agadir.

David Horsey will defend the title he won last year and there has been a change in format since 2011.

The pro-am format, in which two professional players were paired with two amateurs for the first two rounds, has been ditched in the hope of boosting the crowds.

Over in the United States, Scot Martin Laird will defend his Arnold Palmer Invitational title at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Florida.
