After the ceremonials, on Saturday it will be down to the serious business of deciding the fate of the Walker Cup at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club as Great Britain and Ireland’s amateurs take on the holders, the United States

GB and I skipper Nigel Edwards is relishing the prospect of pitting his young team against the holders.

He said: “I’ve loved every minute of it, and now the focus is on getting the right result, getting the players in the right frame of mind to go and perform so that they can show their skills off to the world.”

The competition begins on Saturday with four foursomes matches (GB and I names first) Jimmy Mullen/Ashley Chesters v Maverick McNealy/Hunter Stewart; Paul Dunne/Gary Hurley v Beau Hossler/Denny McCarthy; Cormac Sharvin/Jack McDonald v Jordan Niebrugge/Robby Shelton; Jack Hume/Gavin Moynihan v Lee McCoy/Mike Mcoy.

There was split family loyalties in one of the match-ups - St Annes Old Links member Bob Ashworth is carrying for McDonald, while Bob’s son Jonathan is on the opposite side caddying for American Shelton.

There were eight singles scheduled for Saturday afternoon: Chesters v DeChambeau; Dunne v Stewart; Grant Forrest v Scott Harvey; Mullen v McCarthy; Ewan Ferguson v McNealy; Hurley v Shelton; Hume v Hossler; Moynihan v Niebrugge.
