Dorset's Jack Singh Brar claimed the only sub-par round of the day to set the pace after the first round of the Lytham Trophy.
He shot a 68, two under par at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
He had three birdies and only one bogey, which came at the 10th.
Singh Bar finished his round with a flourish, notching a birdie three at the last.
He ended the day two strokes clear of Scot Matthew Clark, who shot a level par 70.
Singh Bar came to Lytham in good form having won the Selborne Salver last weekend.
