Golfers roared on in heroic effort

a ‘Longest Day’ 72-hole golf challenge is a gruelling endurance test at the best of times, but in last week’s torrential rain it is a fantastic feat.

Simon Burnett from St Annes and two work colleagues did precisely that, completing rounds at Blackpool North Shore, Lytham Green Drive, Staining and finally St Annes Old Links between sunrise and sunset last Thursday to raise funds for the Help The Heroes charity.

Having teed off at 4.41am, Simon, David Stanhope and Jon Mottershead, of Blackpool IT company VoiteQ, were spurred on during the final round at Old Links by representatives of the 2nd Batallion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, including its mascot Rory the Lion.

Despite the downpours, the trio squeezed in 75 holes in all and their efforts have been rewarded as their fundraising approaches £3,000.

Simon said: “We were pretty exhausted by the end and quite proud of the achievement. We were soaked too and my wife deserves a medal for all the laundry she has done since.”

Besides thanking all their sponsors, Simon expressed his gratitude to Old Links head professional Daniel Webster for his support.
