Fylde winger sees the up-side of the game

That’s certainly the case for Fylde RFC winger Jordan Dorrington, who is currently enjoying the up-side of rugby life.

By marked contrast he can hardly be said to have had the benefit of the rub of the green last season.

Last autumn he was banned for four matches after receiving a red card for committing a dangerous, tip-tackle on Tynedale forward Stuart Johnson.

Later in the campaign, 21-year-old Dorrington was ruled out of action with a broken jaw.

But he can have no complaints about the way the dice have fallen in these embryonic stages of the 2014-15 National League One campaign.

He has helped Fylde to go top of the table with two bonus-point wins over Blackheath and Macclesfield - in the 47-0 win over the Cheshire side, Dorrington claimed a hat-trick of tries to put him on top of the league’s scoring charts.

Speaking before tomorrow’s home clash with Rosslyn Park, Dorrington said: “It was surreal to see my name in the paper at the top of the try-scoring list and I couldn’t quite believe it.

“I didn’t just score a hat-trick - I got my first try in national league rugby against Macclesfield.”

Dorrington’s second touchdown revealed remarkable dexterity on his part.

Chasing a probing, cross-kick from fly-half Chris Johnson, it looked odds against him getting near the ball, but he somehow managed , taking it low to ground, his momentum pushing him over.

It was one of the highlights of a memorable afternoon against Macclesfield, both for him and the team.

Dorrington said: “I was surprised that we won so easily - having just come up, I thought Macclesfield would have been more competitive.

“Playing Rosslyn Park tomorrow will be more challenging - like Fylde they have won both their opening matches.”

Dorrington joined Fylde from Vale Of Lune and admitted that the step-up had been ‘massive’ but ‘one of the best things I have ever done.’

He added: “It has been a big change, but it has been easy to settle in as the people at Fylde have been very welcoming.

“I am just happy to be in the side.

“Last season was very stop-start for me.

“I got suspended and later in the season I was out with a broken jaw.”

Dorrington has put the sending-off behind him, though he thinks he had a case on appeal against the dismissal.

He said: “What happened was a complete accident and I thought I would only get a yellow card at worst - when I got a red card, I thought I would win any appeal, but I ended up getting suspended for four matches.”

As for his own personal rugby ambitions, Dorrington said: “I would like to go as far as I can in rugby.

“Whether that’s National League One or even higher than that, I will have to see what happens.”
