Fylde players learn about modern coaching

FYLDE rugby players have had a two-pronged role in the run-up to the start of the new season.

As well as preparing for their duties on the field in National League One, a number of them have been involved in the Lancashire Rugby Union coaching programme.

Indeed, while for many clubs and players, the summer months provide a brief chance to re-charge the batteries or enjoy a spot of recreational touch rugby, the Lancashire Development Centre drive to improve coaching and playing standards continues unabated.

The first of five Lancashire Development Centre summer coaching seminars was held at Burnley RUFC, when 29 coaches from 16 clubs attended a presentation by Pete Anglesea, the Sale Sharks forwards coach.

The Burnley senior squad were involved in the practical aspects of the session, which delivered cutting edge technical methods at the contact area as used at International and Premiership levels of the game.

Development Centre manager Mark Nelson, the Fylde rugby club coach, said: “This is fantastic stuff.

“We are exposing our club coaches and through them our club players to these innovative and highly-effective modern methods of coaching and managing technical and tactical issues within the game.

“Pete gave a great insight into how players should react and adapt at the contact area and the coaches and Burnley players took away a massive amount of information and knowledge from the session.

“Burnley were ideal hosts for the event and underlined their reputation for being a very well-organised club delivering rugby in a soccer mad area.”

The programme continues on August 6, at Liverpool Collegiate RUFC, when Fylde duo Paul Arnold and Jonny Roddam will deliver a session on the line-out.

This will be followed on August 15, at Eccles RFC, when Fylde’s Scott Barrow will look at back play and on August 22, at Leigh RUFC, when Louis McGowan and Fylde’s Alec Loney will be working on the disciplines of the Ruck and Maul.

The programme returns to Burnley for the final seminar in September 10, when ‘making players game aware’ will be the topic of a presentation by former England Head Coach Brian Ashton MBE.
