We deserved something from the game, says Hartlepool boss

Hartlepool United manager Dave Jones says his side's 2-1 defeat against Blackpool was a hard result to swallow.

A late freak goal from substitute Kyle Vassell meant Hartlepool left Bloomfield Road pointless despite putting in an impressive display in what was an end-to-end affair at Bloomfield Road.

Jones believes his side dominated for large spells of the game but acknowledged his players should have done better for the two goals they conceded.

“I think we played well but we switched off for the second goal and that’s what we can’t do,” Jones said.

“It’s a trait that we have at the moment and we’re trying to take that out of us. Whether that’s down to lack of fitness or whatever is something that we’ll have to look at but I thought we deserved something from the game.

“For long spells we dominated, we looked decent on the ball, we maybe should have got another goal or even more than that but when you’re up against teams that are trying to get out of the division, they can change their team with the people on the bench. We’re not at that stage of our development.

“It’s hard to swallow because we played so well but this must be the fifth or sixth time I’ve said that and we’ve got to learn quickly, the youngsters have got to learn quickly and they are doing that but that’s a hard lesson today.

“There is plenty to build on. I just think at this point in time it’s a big learning curve for them but I think if they continue to develop and believe in what’s happening, then we’ll get there.”
