The former England international, now 44, returns to football three years after making his last appearance for Lancaster City while he was assistant manager.

The shock signing comes just a month after Sinclair was convicted of racially abusing a police officer who had arrested him for drink driving.

As previously reported, Sinclair asked the police officer if he was being arrested because he was black, accusing the police of racism before urinating in a police car.

Sinclair continued being racist after he was taken to the cells at Blackpool Police Station, and used a racial slur against the officer, it was also told at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Former Blackpool starlet Sinclair, who lives in a £500,000 home on Victory Boulevard, Lytham, pleaded guilty to drink driving and a racially aggravated public order offence last November.

Sinclair, who scored 15 goals in 112 appearances for the Seasiders from 1989 to 1993, was sentenced to 150 hours' community service for the racially-aggravated public order offence, and given a 20-month driving ban for drink-driving.

Squires Gate made no mention of Sinclair’s conviction in their statement.

The club said: “Squires Gate are delighted to announce the signing of former Blackpool, QPR, West Ham and England international Trevor Sinclair.

“The former England International comes out of retirement three years after making an appearance for Lancaster City whilst he was assistant manager.

“Known affectionately by Blackpool fans as ‘Tricky Trev’ for his dangerous play down the wings and tricky feet, Trev started his footballing career at Blackpool in 1989.

“Many eagle eyed fans will have noticed that Trevor’s son, Isaac, made his debut for Gate on Saturday as a second half sub.

“The chance for Trevor to line up alongside his son was too good to turn down, and we look forward to seeing both line up for Gate in the coming weeks.

“Trevor has trained with the squad for the past couple of weeks, and didn’t look far of back to his best.

“The club are delighted to have a player with so much experience like Trevor at the club and hope that alongside returning to playing, he can help some f the younger players in the squad.”

Sinclair watched Gate’s 3-2 win over City of Liverpool on Saturday and has been training with the squad for the last few weeks.
