Steinsson hails Fleetwood feat that could change lives forever

Five years ago Steinsson was playing in the Premier League for Bolton, while a Town side featuring hotshot Jamie Vardy was on the brink of a historic promotion to the Football League.

Fourth-placed Bolton head to Highbury on Saturday for a crunch promotion clash and Icelander Steinsson, who has been at Fleetwood since January 2015, says consistency is key as Town aim to stretch their unbeaten run to 19 games.

He said: “In recent away games we have participated at venues that could host the whole of Fleetwood.

“It is a great achievement that with a different way of thinking this club has the ability to compete toe-to-toe with huge clubs.

“Bolton is an enormous club and where they are now does not take that away.

“They have players I actually played with. They have players who have played in the Premier League or at the top of the Championship.

“These players have extreme experience of playing at the highest level of English football.

“They are now playing at Highbury against players who have done fantastically, and it is such a credit to the players, to all the staff and to Uwe (head coach Rosler) that this becomes such a special game.

“We try to improve every year and every day, and if we sustain what we do and are consistent in what we do we will be successful.

“This season has been great, but it is always about keeping going, never stopping, never being satisfied and seeing how far that takes us.

“What attracted me to Fleetwood was that mindset of really defying the odds, punching above our weight and trying to do things differently.

“We are standing up against clubs that are huge and have incredible resources, but obviously we are trying to do things in a very smart way.

“The turnaround of staff is extremely low here. The turnaround of players in recent years hasn’t been as great as at many other clubs, so we are trying to build long-term while playing in the short-term.

“When the Cod Army goes on tour and sees these stadiums we are playing at, it is a massive gap and a huge step. People sometimes don’t realise what an amazing achievement it is.

“It is very important for everyone to stay on the ground but the players now have two months to absolutely change their lives forever.”
