Evans had fulfilled his remit for the season by lifting Gate securely into mid-table but he said: “I took over 10 games into the season and we looked to get ourselves safe and then build into next season.

“Those last six games were massive for us to try and build a squad ready for next season, so to have that taken away it’s really hard to plan.

“At this level of football you’ve got to get the balance right. It’s semi-professional and we take it as seriously as we can but real life does comes into it.

“We may well lose players who need to make up the shortfall for the money that they’ve lost now.”

Evans sympathises with teams denied a tilt at promotion, such as nearby Longridge Town, who stood sixth.

He said: “We’ve got six games left but Longridge have 12. That’s an extra 18 points on top of what we’ve got left to play for.

“It would have been crazy to promote a team who had played more games or had maybe played the teams at the bottom.”
