Sowerby's patience pays off for Fleetwood Town

The former Squires Gate man has enjoyed some regular game time since John Sheridan’s arrival, capped by the winning goal in Good Friday’s 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.

Town head into today’s game on the back of six games without defeat under Sheridan; a run which includes three straight wins and four consecutive clean sheets.

Sowerby, who was always on the fringes of Uwe Rosler’s side, has had a new lease of life under Sheridan.

The 23-year-old said: “He likes the way I play, he knows what I can do; he said ‘just give me time and you will be alright under me.’

“I didn’t play the first game but I’ve come in since and I think I’ve done well.

“All the lads are full of confidence, you can see it in the way we are playing.

“I think we can’t just rely on the strikers; Kyle (Dempsey) scored last weekend so I want to help chip in and see where it goes.”

Sowerby’s coolness in front of goal proved the difference in difficult conditions on Friday.

He was pleased to be back among the goals and hopes for more of the same today as Town seek three points which should almost certainly guarantee survival.

He said: “I’ve scored a few this season so it is nice to be back on the scoresheet.

“Every game just means so much to us.; we are down there and we need to fight for our lives.

“Wimbledon are down there as well so we needed to get the three points.”

With seven games to go, Sowerby believes Town’s recent run of results have gone a long way to ensuring they will be in League One next term.

However, he echoed Sheridan’s thoughts and warned there is no room for complacency.

He said: “We are going into the game full of confidence.

“We have had a good run of results really, we’ve just got to carry on and not let it slip because we know, if we do, we will be back down there.

“I don’t think any of the lads look at the points, we just go out there to try and win the game and do the best we can.”

There may, nevertheless, be changes from the team that won on Friday given the horrendous weather in the capital.

“It was very hard,” Sowerby admitted.

“The pitch was in an awful condition but I think we just used it better.

“I don’t think I have played in those conditions before.

“You couldn’t even pass sideways; it was just a case of getting it forward but we battled hard, defended well and got the win.”
