The German, who used to be in charge at Brentford, Wigan and Leeds, hardened significantly in the betting for the Highbury post over the past 24 hours.

Rosler is known to want to get back into management - his last job was at Elland Road, but his tenure there ended after only 12 matches and he exited through the revolving-door to be replaced by Steve Evans, who himself was later removed.

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen would appear to be in pole position for the Highbury role left open following Steven Pressley’s resignation.

But one possible sticking point is that the Dutchman left for the United States and was not due back in the country until Monday.

Neither Rosler and Meulensteen are the sole candidates by any means.

It is understood chairman Andy Pilley and technical director Grétar Steinsson were due to undertake more interviews today.

It is highly unlike that the new man will be in place in time for Friday’s friendly at Highbury against Wigan Athletic.
