Rosler hails Fleetwood hero Jonsson for beating pain barrier

Jonsson injured his foot in Wednesday’s EFL Cup penalty shoot-out defeat by Leeds.

Passed fit enough to play after an x-ray, Jonsson was still in pain but lasted the full 90 against former Town boss Graham Alexander’s Iron side.

The Icelander opened the scoring by nodding in Bobby Grant’s cross, then David Ball made it 2-0 early in the second half.

But the Iron fought back as Tom Hopper and Kevin van Veen’s spectacular strike made it 2-2.

Rosler said Jonsson’s goal was a deserved reward. “I think for Eggert it was very tough,” he said.

“We found out on Friday that the x-ray was clear and nothing was broken.

“All credit to him – he went out on the pitch against Scunthorpe and we needed him.

“I don’t think we have another player like him in that position, so he played with pain and painkillers. I take my hat off to him.

“The goal is a reward for his professionalism and his desire to play and help us out in a very difficult position.

“The first assessment of the medical staff is that everyone else came through.”

Rosler was pleased with the delivery against Scunthorpe, but the ex-Manchester City striker says Town should have scored more goals after Devante Cole and debutant Ricardo Kip wasted free headers and Jimmy Ryan hit the bar.

Rosler said: “It was not the most fantastic game to watch but that is this league.

“On certain days in the year you cannot perform to the best of your potential because of the fixture list.

“We did not complicate things in the beginning. We got that goal and I’m happy that we are scoring.

“The delivery was very good against Scunthorpe. We looked strong on set-pieces. We should have had at least one or two more goals.”

Before the game Rosler signed young midfielder George Glendon until January on loan from his former club Manchester City.

Rosler said: “I think we give him the chance to grow into League football.

“He is not quite ready now to throw him in, especially in a game like Scunthorpe, but we will build him up.

“I think he has the technical standards and the ability I am looking for in a midfield player.”
