Pressure never off for Town

A 1-0 victory over Port Vale on Saturday was enough to end the seven-game streak, Stephen Dobbie’s penalty 10 minutes from time sealing the precious win.

But Roberts, who made his first League One start of the campaign in the absence of the injured Nathan Pond, insists three points change nothing.

He said: “The pressure is always on in the dressing room, whether we win lose or draw.

“We’ve won on Saturday but the gaffer is still picking up on points and looking to where we can improve. And we’ll work on that in the week.

“But there’s always that pressure, no matter what the result.”

Not that Fleetwood’s players are underestimating the importance of ending a sticky sequence of results which had seen Graham Alexander’s men slide down the League One table.

Roberts knows performance of late haven’t been rewarded, something he hopes will now change.

He said: “It was very important for the team that we got that win. It’s been a bit frustrating and a long time coming.

“We’ve maybe not had the luck at times. But we put in a good performance and came out with the three points.”

And now Fleetwood’s captain is hoping the club can kick-start another run to help them climb back up the table and keep in touch with the play-off back.

“We’ve got to believe in what we do,” he said.

“We’ve worked hard and a few of us have got minutes in the week.

“We can’t let the team spirit drop.

“We’re used to winning at this football club .

“We’ve drawn too many games recently and it was just nice to get back to winning ways.

“Now we’ve got to try and put a bit of a run together.”

And the former Crewe and Stevenage centre-half would love to be involved, despite finding his chances limited so far this term.

“It’s been frustrating for me,” he admitted. “I’m just like anybody else.

“I want to lead the team and I want to be out there playing for Fleetwood.

“But I’ve had to be patient and work hard on the training ground, and now I’ve got my chance.”

Fleetwood are unbeaten at Highbury in the League since winning promotion – Morecambe the only team to beat them on home turf, in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

But it’s not been such a good story for Town on the road, with Alexander’s men suffering 1-0 defeats in each of their last three games.

They will be hoping to turn that record around when they travel to struggling Colchester United at the weekend.

The U’s are currently in the League One relegation zone.
