Pressley’s patient in search for fresh pace

Fleetwood ground out a 1-0 victory at Barnsley on Saturday to lift themselves out of the relegation zone and make it two wins from four for the big Scot.

But Pressley wants more from Fleetwood, promising fast attacking football will come in time.

The manager, who is three weeks into his Highbury tenure, believes he needs to add to his squad to achieve those results, but won’t be making any moves without the club having done all the necessary homework.

He believes he’s got enough at his disposal to continue to pick up results until the right man can be found.

“We still lack blistering speed,” said Pressley.

“That’s an area that in time we are going to have to address.

“If we are going to be quick on the transition you need speed in your side.

“It’s an area in the long term we need to improve.

“But in the short term we’ve got good options.

“It’s about the consistency now.

“The players proved against Burton they can do it.

“It’s doing it on a regular basis.”

Pressley’s first mission as Fleetwood boss was to tighten things up at the back.

With two clean-sheets from the last fortnight that mission is progressing.

Pressley has relied on talent already at the club to engineer Fleetwood’s turnaround in form.

And the manager won’t rush into any deals, insisting his time out of the game has made him a smarter operator

“I’ve learned lessons from my previous job,” said Pressley.

“You have to do your due dilligence.

“I don’t want to just be going on people’s recommendations.

“It’s important that when we bring people in we do all we can to ensure they are the right people for the club.

“Then if they don’t perform we can at least say we did things properly.

“That was a lesson I learned.”

Town’s unique transfer system takes a lot of the work away from the manager.

Technical Director Gretar Steinsson oversees much of the club’s recruitment.

He is likely to present Pressley with a list of potential targets based on the manager’s requirements.

It’s a way of working Pressley believes helps him spend more time doing vital work on the training ground.

He said: “I know people may not believe it but we have a lot on our plate managers.

“Sometimes you spend nine or ten hours on the training ground and then have to go three or four times a week to watch games at night.

“You end up killing yourself physically.

“It’s important that when we come in here we’re motivated and other people can take care of that aspect.”
