Fleetwood Town will have to battle through the play-offs to win promotion from League Two.
Chesterfield’s 2-0 win over Burton Albion on Sunday afternoon confirmed Graham Alexander’s side, placed fourth in the division, would no longer be able to catch any of the top three sides.
Town’s 1-1 draw with Southend on Saturday meant they were unable to capitalise on defeat for Scunthorpe at Exeter while Rochdale’s win over Cheltenham put them out of reach.
Fleetwood will now play either Burton Albion, Southend United or York City in a two-leg play-offs semi final.
The final line up will be decided after next weekend’s fixtures which see Burton play Southend and York face already promoted Scunthorpe.
Fleetwood travel to Chesterfield, who can seal the League Two title with a win.
