Speaking in the wake of the end of Steven Pressley’s nine-month tenure in charge at Highbury, Pilley said: The quality of the candidates that we have seen already has been exceptional - real top names.

“It’s a very sought-after job and it is something that is very attractive to many people in football.”

Pilley would not go into specifics about who was uppermost in his thoughts about the new manager - former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has been installed as the bookies’ favourite.

The Fleetwood chairman insisted: “At this stage we have an open mind.

“It is about taking stock of who applies and then filtering that down into the next stage and the interview stage - it is about the chemistry, the fit and who does share the vision for the future with the powers-that-be at Fleetwood.

“For obvious reasons, given that the season starts a week on Saturday, we want to start the process as soon as we can.

“We have interviewed somebody this morning already and we will be interviewing somebody else within the next 24 hours.

“We want to get things moving - we want to get the ball rolling and it makes perfect sense to do it as quickly as we can.

“It is a case of getting this process right and the right individual to take us forward,” Pilley concluded.
