Mellor wants promotion with Blackpool

The 25-year-old right-back has put pen to paper on a one-year deal after turning down the chance to stay at Plymouth Argyle.

Mellor played 92 times in two seasons with the Pilgrims and was a member of the side which reached the League Two Play-off Final last season but lost out to Wimbledon.

And the defender hopes he can go one step further with Blackpool this time around.

He told the club website: “Blackpool shouldn’t be in League Two. It’s a shame we find ourselves here but we want to do something about it.

“I have played a lot of games in League Two now and I know what it’s all about. I want to bring some consistency and work hard for this team.”

Mellor becomes new boss Gary Bowyer’s fifth signing since taking over from Neil McDonald last month and will travel with the rest of the squad to Scotland tomorrow.

Pool’s week-long training camp at St Andrews will include a behind-closed-doors fixture.

Mellor’s two seasons in Devon followed six with hometown club Crewe. He has made over 150 League appearances for the two clubs and says that being closer to his roots played a big part in his decision to join Pool.

He added: “It’s great to be back up north. Even though we have a lot of long away trips, for me personally it all means a lot less travelling.

“I spent some good times with Crewe and it was good to get promoted out of this division with them (via the play-offs in 2012). Hopefully we can do that again.

“The Scotland trip is a good chance to get to know everyone. We all can’t wait to get up there now.”

Mellor signed for Pool three days after left-back Andy Taylor’s arrival from Walsall and boss Bowyer is delighted to have strengthened both full-back positions.

He said: “Kelvin is an attacking full-back with bundles of energy and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“He’s trained with us for a couple of days now and knows what’s required to be successful in this division.”
