A Blackpool and Fylde Sunday Alliance match was abandoned after a referee was allegedly assaulted seconds after sending off a player.

The division two match between Teamsport and K&B Autos at Boundary Park, Grange Park, was abandoned after 82 minutes following the incident on Sunday.

A Teamsport player allegedly attacked the referee after being sent off for using foul and abusive language.

A witness said: “The referee showed the red card to the player, who then put his head against the referee’s head, his hands near his throat and then forcibly shoved him backwards with his head and hands.

“The ref fell back a few yards but stayed on his feet. He then stepped away, saying he was abandoning the game.

“Everyone was concerned for him but he seemed OK. He’s one of the more experienced refs and didn’t seem hurt.”

The incident was heavily discussed on the Facebook page, with the alleged perpetrator also commenting. He said: “I’ll take the ban and learn from it.”

The referee’s report has been submitted to the Lancashire FA, pending an investigation.

Dave Connor of BFSA said: “He has been pushed but suggestions it was a headbutt are not true. The referee has done the right thing and abandoned the game. In the past we could have withdrawn the player’s registration but our hands are now tied pending an investigation by the County FA.”
