MICKEY Mellon will make the most of a free week to have his Fleetwood Town side fully refreshed and raring to go in next Tuesday’s FA Cup replay at Yeovil.

Town and Barrow are the only Blue Square Bet Premier teams not in league action tonight, and Mellon is expected to field fringe players in Saturday’s FA Trophy first-round clash at Northwich Victoria.

It’s a welcome break before a hectic festive period and Mellon told The Gazette: “You do like to be playing games when you are getting good results, but this is a really busy period and games come thick and fast, so we’ll take the rest.

“The Yeovil game was our third in seven days and we have a lot of travelling coming up, with Yeovil, Newport County and Hayes and Yeading in the space of a week.”

And with a third-round home game against Blackpool awaiting next week’s replay winners, Mellon wants his players fully rested for the replay.

The manager will head to North Wales tonight to take in the top-of-the table clash between Wrexham and resurgent Southport.

A home win will leave second-placed Town three points behind in the title race, whereas victory for Southport would see them join the top two on 47 points. Fleetwood will regain top spot on goal difference if the Sandgrounders win by four.

Mellon will pay particularly close attention to Southport, who are the next visitors to Highbury on Boxing Day.

Two Town players almost certainly out of the side to visit Evo-Stik premier side Vics this weekend are Shaun Beeley and Jamie Milligan, who both picked up injuries in Friday’s dramatic clash with Yeovil.

Beeley failed to return for the second half because of a dead leg, while Milligan suffered a badly cut knee shortly after netting the equalising penalty.
