Squires Gate manager Dave McCann is hoping his side will start achieving the results their performances warrant when they visit Norton United on Saturday.

After losing to an agonising late goal in the FA Cup at Bootle, Gate threatened without reward against Runcorn Town on Tuesday, when they were edged out by the only goal.

McCann said: “I thought it was an excellent game, with lots of chances and attempts on target by both teams.

“We were very unlucky not to get a share of the points as the performance was there. We’ll be looking for the same type of performance but with the right results.”

Both sides started at a high tempo but couldn’t break through in the first half, with Gate striker Seydou Bamba prominent. In the second half, Ben Fishwick and Russ Mc Kenna were busy in midfield but Gate could not capitalise.

However, keeper Ben Fletcher was wrong-footed as Paul Shanley scoredthe only goal for Runcorn just past the hour. Gate threatened until the final minute but Runcorn held on to their slim lead.

Gate: Fletcher, Jakes, Harvie, Fishwick, Botham, Unsworth, Ralph, McKenna, Bamba, Landless, Bryson; Subs: Churchman, Farrow, Nay, Hindle
