THE Gledhill Cup is back at Quilligan’s after its rare year away.
The Sunday Alliance premier division champions completed a treble-winning campaign with victory in the traditional end-of-season showpiece at Bloomfield Road.
But first division winners Fleetwood Gym gave them a run for their money in the cup final before going down 2-0.
AFC Fylde players Mark Beattie and Martin Baird scored the goals, but Mark Spedding’s side had to wait until the final ten minutes to seal the win. It is the sixth time in seven seasons that Quilligan’s have won the cup and they were determined to make up for their extra-time defeat by Poulton Town 12 months ago.
Man of the match Beattie opened the scoring with a first-time shot into the corner in the 21st minute.
Gym started the second half strongly, Robbie Boal going closest to an equaliser when his 25-yard shot was turned around the post.
Baird wrapped up the win in the 81st minute, chesting down Will Watt’s cross at the far post before firing home from close range.
Quilligans hit the woodwork twice in the dying moments but a a wider winning margin would have been harsh on Gym.
The winners end the season unbeaten by Fylde coast opposition, their sole defeat coming against Lostock in the Lancashire Cup.
