Gate ended an up-and-down North West Counties premier campaign on a low note.

Gate had the better of the opening half-hour against their fourth-placed visitors but it was Barnoldswick who broke the deadlock through Aaron Hollindrake’s low shot.

Russ McKenna’s side equalised seconds before half-time, when Chris Bennett and the ever-present Scott Harries liked up well to serve up a tap-in for the unmarked Adam Cragg at the back post.

However, the visitors dominated after the restart, Harry Thompson making it 2-1 on 62 minutes after a mix- up in the Gate defence.

The hosts did have chances to equalise, with Harries denied one-on-one by keeper Marko Maros and Bennett going close with a firm volley.

At the other end, Gate keeper Neil Beesley pulled off a string of fine saves, including a penalty, before Barnsoldswick struck twice in the final five minutes through Chris Ridhalgh and Stuart Aidrie.

Gate finish 16th and McKenna said: “It’s obviously a disappointing end. I thought the game was fairly even for the first hour but their second goal gave them the momentum to push on. We tried to press but tiredness told.”
